Happy Tuesday friends and happy Fall, even though technically it’s still summer for at least another month here in Austin, Texas.
I am so excited for this week because seven is my favorite number and this week we have A LOT of great things to celebrate (psst: I hit my 100 subscribers mark last weekend!)
I am so glad you are here.
Books & essays I have been reading:
Running & Being by Dr. George Sheehan. George was a writer and runner, who was able to translate much of my experiences into written words that I couldn’t do myself yet. There is a strong quality of mindfulness in his writing that I so much admire. I learned about this book from one of my favorite writers Terrell Johnson, who is also a runner. Check his work here.
An excerpt from the book that I like:
Life, except for a favored few, like poets and children and athletes and saints, is pretty much of a bore. Given the choice, most of us would give up the reality of today for the memory of yesterday or the fantasy of tomorrow. We desire to live anywhere but in the present.
The Back of the Napkin by Dan Roam. This is a super cool visual book that teaches how to articulate thoughts and design for solutions via doodles and simple visualizations on paper. I am a sucker for writing things down and have always wanted to be better at documenting my thought processes. I will report back on how I like this one when I am done with it.
Working Backwards by Bill Carr and Colin Bryar (on the culture, leadership principles and “secrets” behind the success of Amazon. It was written by two ex-Amazonians so might be slightly biased but it’s interesting read nevertheless)
Great Substack articles:
To love a dog by Reena Kapoor (in memoriam of Cam the corgi </3)
When the money’s too damn good by Nat Eliason
Twenty four lessons for twenty four months by Katie from the unfurled spirals newsletter
10 riffs on how we become ourselves by Jessica Hagy
Leadership hack: Building trust takes trust by Ami Vora
I’m in Colorado! Visiting friends for a week here in the Mile High City and have already felt right at home with the nature lol.
Magical Austin summer nights. One of my favorite spots in the city Mozart’s Coffee is running its summer live music series. This place is awesome, go after the sunsets and it can be the most chill / romantic spot.
I shared my essay on my love for Austin on twitter and got recognized by writers I admire - Paul Millerd and Terrell Johnson. It’s one of my favorite essays I have written so go check it out if you have not yet.
🎉 Celebrating 100 subscribers with Life with MD publication 🎉
Thank you so so much for following along and supporting my writing journey this past eight months, each and every one of you rocks! When I was going through a slow plateau in July, I never thought that I could get to 100 readers before the end of the year. All this just to show that consistency matters, keep going!
Practicing meditation for one month straight. If you are an anxious or prone to overthinking like I am, I’d highly recommend meditating every day. It has helped a lot with dampening down my over-reactive mind.
Some of my favorite meditation videos:
